New CLP Information

This is a CLP label update (EU)

What was Introduced?

The EU’s updated CLP regulation, passed in April 2024, introduces important changes for labelling chemical products, which impact industries like home fragrance. These new rules set specific requirements for font size, spacing, and background colours to improve label readability and consumer safety.

Regarding the December 2024 update, new EU CLP rules were introduce a minimum font size (x-height 1.2mm) and increased spacing. with most provisions becoming mandatory by July 1, 2026, existing EU products must comply by January 2027.

These rules do not currently apply in Great Britain, but may be adopted in future. We’ll update our guidance if that happens.

Please ensure your label size is suitable for legibility and compliance.

What Does This Mean For You & Us?

  • No More Colored CLP Backgrounds On Your Labels: The new rules require that all hazard information to be printed on a white background with black text. the CLP details need to stand out in plain sight so it’s time for a change for us all. You can still have the rest of your labels pop but just not the CLP information.

  • You Need The Right Font for the Right Size: Larger packages need larger text, and your CLP font size now has to follow minimum millimeter standards. Line spacing has been looked at too, and there's now a minimum line space of 120%.

  • More Specific Fonts: Labels must use a single, easily legible sans-serif font. Sans-serif fonts lack the small projecting features called "serifs" at the end of strokes, making them cleaner and more straightforward to read.

When do I have to look at making the changes required?

It has been adopted by the Council as of October 14, 2024. Once it appears in the Official Journal, that is when the compliance clock starts:

  • New Products: Businesses will have 18 months from the publication date in the Official Journal to update labels with the new standards.
  • Existing Products on the Market: There’s more flexibility, with a window of up to 4 years for items already labeled under current rules, depending on classification and any required changes.

With the publication expected shortly, us and you will soon have the exact start date for these transitions, so keep an eye out. This timeline will allow for an organised shift to compliance with the new CLP requirements. We will update this is due course.
